- EPOTUF® 91-263 can be used to produce water-reducible flexographic inks for printing on plastic films. These inks have excellent adhesion and excellent water, crinkle, and rub resistance. EPOTUF® 91-263 is recommended for printing on high and low density polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly-coated paper and board. The water solubility promotes improved printability versus the emulsions currently used in film printing. A variety of amines can be used to neutralize EPOTUF® 91-263, but ammonia is not recommended due to viscosity stability problems at print viscosities. The addition of water produces good solution viscosity and drying properties. Upon addition of water, the viscosity will initially increase, but as solids content approaches 40% to 45% N.V., the viscosity will begin to drop rapidly. This is a characteristic of the resin and does not indicate insolubility. EPOTUF® 91-263 contains unsaturation in the resin, and the addition of driers improves aged film properties via oxidative cure. We have also found that the addition of Dri-RX® from OM Group will act in conjunction with the metallic driers to achieve a faster dry and better adhesion to plastic films. We recommend 1% Manganese Hydrocure® I on resin solids, and 0.2% – 0.3% Dri-RX® on resin solids as a starting point. Many formulators prefer to blend emulsion and solution resins. EPOTUF® 91-263 is compatible with a variety of emulsions, but exhibits limited compatibility with some of the more common emulsions for ink. Emulsions can be used to modify drying, alter film properties, and impart improved blocking resistance. Contact your Reichhold technical service representative if assistance is required with emulsion compatibility. EPOTUF® 91-263 has excellent pigment properties for the preparation of dispersions. If a commercial dispersion is preferred, your Reichhold technical service representative can be of assistance if compatibility problems are encountered.
