- Application Procedure
- Limitations: Apply in good weather when air and surface temperatures are above 40°F. For optimum application properties, bring material to 70-80°F temperature range prior to mixing and application.
- Surface Preparation: Paint only clean dry surfaces. Apply to sandblasted steel unless otherwise specified. Blasting shall be done with centrifugal wheel or compressed air blasting equipment, using proper abrasive to attain an average profile depth of 1.5 mils. Do not reuse sand or abrasive. Blow dust and grit from surface with clean, dry air. Coat prepared surface before rust or contamination occurs. Immersion- Steel structures Painting Council No. 5, White Metal Blast Cleaning” (SSPC-SP-5). Frequent Condensation, Splash and Spillage - Steel Structures Painting Council No. 10, “ Near-White Blast Cleaning”. Non-Immersion - Steel Structures Painting Council No. 6, “Commercial Blast Cleaning”.
- Previously Painted Surfaces: Remove all previously applied coatings, rust, rust scale, other corrosion products.
- Mixing: LO Primer is supplied in two components. Part B must be combined with Part A. Mixing with a “Jiffy Mixer” attached to a low speed mechanical mixer is recommended. Mix thoroughly, 3-4 minutes is usually adequate to ensure proper crosslinking. Allow 30-45 minutes induction time before using.
- Thinning: If thinning is necessary thin with Pilgrim 111 Thinner up to 1/2 gallon /4/gallon.
Application: Apply by brush, roller, or spray. Apply at 10-12 mils wet

Roller: 1/8” mohair or foam roller. Conventional Spray: DeVilbiss MBC-510 gun; E tip and 704 air cap; 1/2” ID material hose; double regulated pressure tank with oil and moisture separator. Airless Spray - Graco 30:1 ratio pump with large surge chamber; Reverse-A-Clean tip with .019” to .023” orifice.
- Work Stoppages: Do not allow material to remain in hoses. Release pressure from pressure tank and disconnect material hose. Thoroughly flush hose and spray gun with #5 Cleaner.
- Cleanup: Clean all equipment immediately after use with Pilgrim #5 Cleaner . Spray equipment requires flushing with either of these solvents. It is good working practice to periodically flush out spray equipment during the course of the working day. Frequency should depend upon amount sprayed, temperature, elapsed time including delay, etc.
- Welding: In the event welding or flame cutting is performed on metal coated with this product, do so in accordance with instructions in ANSI/ASC Z 49.1, “Safety in Welding and Cutting.” All welded, burned, or otherwise damaged areas should be reprepared to base metal and recoated as specified.
