Canola Oil, known generically as rapeseed, is a member of the Brassica family, which includes mustard, broccoli and radishes. The term "Canola" was approved in 1986 by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the United Stats to identify the edible varieties of rapeseed. Each Canola flower produces a string bean-like pod that contains about 30 small seeds. The seeds contain about 40 percent oil. Canola is a relatively new crop in the United States and it has caught the attention of farmers because of its income potential. Canola was first grown in the United States on a commercial basis in 1986 and has been included in the Farm Bill. This is a benefit to growers who plant Canola on flex acres or qualify for an oilseed marketing loan.
