The spun yarns have many surface fibrils that protrude in various directions at various lengths from the surface. This fiber loft contributes to high cross-ply tensile and interlaminar shear strengths for 2-D composite materials. Contour conformation without wrinkling is another advantage of spun yarn fabrics. ZOLTEK PX30 materials undergo high temperature carbonization process, involving a long temperature soak time, resulting in a very thermally stable and chemically pure fabric with low oxidation rate.

Applied Sciences Inc. PR-19-XT-LHT is produced by heat-treating the fiber at 1500°C. This converts any chemically vapor deposited carbon present on the surface of the fiber to a short range ordered structure. The inherent conductivity of the fiber is increased.

StarPCS™ SBMC-601 is a discontinuous carbon fiber reinforced molding compound containing carbon fiber, a vinyl substituted polysiloxane resin, and refractory particulate. SBMC-601 cures at temperatures between 180-250o C and functions as a high temperature carbon fiber reinforced structure with a silicon oxycarbide ceramic. Curing produces a green fiber reinforced composite material. Further processing to 850o C (minimum) in inert gas results in an amorphous silicon oxycarbide matrix ceramic composite that can be used as a pre-form for use with different infiltration polymers or materials. Ideal infiltration polymers include Polyramic® SPR-688 or SPR-212 based slurries (SL-227, SL-480), and other Starfire® Systems polysiloxane products.

Conductive Composites Nickel Coated Fibers - Precision Coated & Converted Fibers (PC2F) 1CC1PC-0.15 is a highly uniform, conductive short fiber format in lengths from 3mm to 100µm. PC2F is a high-performance conductive and structural fiber with superior handling properties and excellent conductivity/shielding capabilities that is both lighter and longer than typical nickel coated graphite formats. Through our proprietary Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) coating process, fibers are coated with a very thin, robust, and ductile film of pure nickel.
