- Principal Use
A protective and decorative coating used for farm equipment, implement, machinery, and for general maintenance.
- Recommended Thinners
- < 60°F: No.1 or No. 143
- >70°F: No.13 or No. 145
- Note: Check VOC restrictions before thinning with No.1, No.13 or No.145 Thinner.
- Recommended Primer
No. 492.43 Primer Corrosion Resisting Gray, 497.117 HS Primer Red Oxide, or 497.118 HS Primer Old Cat Yellow.
- Clean Up Thinner
No. 1 or No. 13
- Surface Preparation
- Surfaces must be clean and dry, free of oil, grease, wax and other contaminants.
- A chemical wash and pretreatment will give the best performance.
- Use of a primer will prolong life of the coating and is highly recommended.
- For refinishing, or where chemical cleaning is unavailable, remove oil and grease by steam cleaning.
- To obtain a smooth and professional finish, sand with 280 wet or dry sandpaper.
- The best results are obtained by water sanding followed by washing with No.1 Thinner.
- Recommended Substrate
Steel.
- Application Equipment
Conventional or airless spray.
- Application Procedure
- Mix until uniform before using.
- Material is supplied at spray viscosity.
- Do not add any thinner to keep VOC below 3.25 lbs/gal.
- To prevent any craters, fisheyes, or crawling when used over fiberglass-reinforced plastics, add 2 ounces of No. 850-10 or No. 850-05 per gallon of material.
- If thinner is needed use No.143 VOC Free Thinner.
- For VOC restrictions of 3.5#/gal, up to 8 ounces of No.1, No.13 or No.145 Thinner may be used.
Conventional Spray:
- Apply with industrial equipment, such as DeVilbiss MBC or JGA spray gun with No. 78 or 765 Air cap, E fluid tip and needle, or Binks 18 or 62 spray gun, and a pressure pot with a mechanical agitator.
- A moisture and oil trap in the main air supply line is required.
- If VOC requirement is not a constraint, thin with up to 1 pint thinner to desired viscosity.
Airless Spray:
- Any standard airless spray equipment, such as Graco Bulldog Hydra-Spray or larger, with a .013 - .017 inch fluid tip is recommended.
Brush or Roller:
- Not advocated except for small areas.
- Apply wet coat in even parallel passes, overlapping each pass 50% to avoid any holidays, bare areas and/or pinholes.
- If necessary, follow with a spray pass at right angles to the first pass.
- For best results, use at temperature of 65°F or above.
- Do not apply when surface or ambient temperature is anticipated to drop below 50°F in 24 hours.
- Do not apply to damp surfaces, and surface temperature must be 5°F above the dew point for 24 hours to prevent moisture condensation, which might result in water spotting and poor film integrity.
- For added toughness and improved chemical resistance, use 1 pint of 050.23 or 050.43 Hardener per gallon of paint.
- Activated material must be used within 6 hours at 77°F.
