How many qualities of alum stone are available ?

They are many different kind of alum: iron alum, chromium alum, sodium alum, ammonium alum, potassium alum. In the cosmetic field, the potassium alum is the only alum recognized as 100 % of natural origin and accepted by eco-cert cosmos natural. In the market, many different qualities and forms of potassium alum are available. The acidic value of potassium alum stone varies between 3.0 to 3.5. By verdan, we offer only the best part of the potassium alum which is the heart of the crystal, where alum stone is the purest, most acidic (ph 3.0) and free of aluminum hydroxide sulfate.

Low pH - The key for more efficacy

During our 40 years of expertise in sourcing and selecting potassium alum, we discovered that ordinary potassium alum crystallize in a chaotic or anarchic form, while, in the heart of the mineral the alum grows with a perfect geometrical pyramidal angle of 52o similar to the famous pyramid of KEOPS. We called this perfect formation Kalunite™ or Chancine™. We verified that the pH of kalunite™ is at the lowest level (pH 3.0). This more acidic pH enhance the antibacterial properties and could influence positively the efficacy as body deodorant.

Kalunite™ Potassium Alum in Verdan Deodorants vs Aluminium Salts
  • There are two main differences between kalunite potassium alum (aluminum potassium sulfate dodecahydrate) and the salts aluminum chloride and aluminum chlorohydrate which are commonly used in antiperspirants. These last two salts react with peptides and amino acids in the skin to form a gel which then blocks sweat ducts and glands, preventing perspiration.
  • Kalunite potassium alum has a much larger molecule (around 480 daltons) which is too large to be absorbed through the skin (the maximum size that can be absorbed is less than 450 daltons). Instead of forming a gel, thereby preventing perspiration, kalunite potassium alum sits on the surface of the skin where it prevents the bacteria responsible for causing sweaty odors from multiplying.
