- Optical Brighteners (OB) are useful in suppressing the yellow index of the base polymer, giving the end-product a bright glossy surface.
- For white products, whiteness index will also increase.
- These additives work by absorbing UV light and re-emitting most of the absorbed energy as blue fluorescent light with wavelengths between 400 and 500 nm. It’s this ability of optical brighteners to absorb invisible short wavelength radiation and re-emit in the visible blue light, that imparts a brilliant whiteness to the light reflected by a substrate and is the key to OB effectiveness.
