- Product Background
Highly prized since ancient times, clove was the subject of considerable competition between the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English in their attempts to control the spice market. Predominantly grown in Indonesia, its country of origin, production is largely destined for the local cigarette, or “kretek”, market. Clove production continues to increase each year, with production at around 110,000 tons of clove across the country. Madagascar, the other major producer, dedicates some of its trees to leaf production, from which the essential oil with its high eugenol content is extracted. This is the starting point for obtaining vanilline, which is highly sought after across the world for its wonderful vanilla aroma.
