- Product Background
A species that is indigenous to western regions of Western Europe, chamomile was highly valued by Pliny the Elder for its apple aroma. The botanical genus is derived from the Greek term mélon, “apple”, and khamai, “in the earth”. Its reference to “Roman” came at a later stage when German botanist Joachim Camerarius named it thus in 1588 due to the fact that it grew so prolifically close to Rome. Today it is grown almost everywhere in western and central Europe, as well as in certain countries in the Mediterranean Basin and is particularly prized in herbal medicine for its calming and digestive properties. It is grown for essential oil production, and must be differentiated from related species, such as German chamomile and Blue chamomile.
