- Difference between Clear Castor Oil and Black Castor Oil
- Natural Castor Oil is Yellow
Natural castor oil is actually pale yellow when cold pressed. Cold pressing means there is no heat involved; castor beans are just squeezed at high pressure to extract oil when pressed out of the seed. The advantage of cold pressing is that you do not degrade any of the oil using heat. The clear castor oil is a result of filtering this natural yellow crude castor oil to further lower the iodine content which makes it yellow. The higher the purity of the castor oil the lighter the color it will be.
- Black Castor Oil - Impurities are added
Many people believe that black castor oil is more natural and the black color is related to it being less processed, but this is not true. The process of getting the dark color involves adding ash from roasted castor beans into the oil. Both seem to have a similar moisturizing effect on hair though. The Ash is not an addition to the oil but a byproduct of the process of extraction. The black in the name is used to differentiate it from clear castor oil. Castor oil is a plant natural oil that contains numerous fatty acids and phytochemicals that provide many healing properties. Black castor oil also offers many benefits when used in your hair and skin.
