- Uses and Applications
Silsurf® B608 is used to prepare stable oil-in-water or silicone-in-water emulsions and to enhance wetting in various personal care and industrial formulations. It can be used as the primary emulsifier in some cases, but is often used as the secondary emulsifier to further stabilize an emulsion. Silsurf B608 provides softness and shine to hair and detangling for wet hair. In these uses, it also provides hydrophilicity and improved heat stability.
Silsurf® B608 is used as a surface wetting agent or surface tension reducing agent in
aqueous solution. The material is very surface active, lowering the surface tension of a
solution to the low 20 mN/m range. Interfacial tensions are also lowered. Wetting and flow and leveling of the solution are improved.
In aqueous solutions, Silsurf® B608 can act as a weak defoamer, a non-foamer or a weak profoamer depending on concentration, temperature and other components in the solution. In general, it is considered a non-foaming surfactant.
Silsurf® B608 is compatible in solvent-borne and UV cured coating systems, and with most of the resins used in the coatings industry including acrylic, alkyd, polyurethane, polyester and epoxy resins. In these systems, Silsurf B608 provides wetting, flow and leveling, penetration, slip, release, and soft feel as well as mar, stain and abrasion resistance.
Silsurf® B608 is effective at very low levels and shows excellent compatibilities in most
solvents. It is recommended that it be used between 0.05 -2.0 wt % percent based on the total formulation. It can typically be added at any stage during the production process.- Industrial Uses
- Leather finishing: wetting, softness.
- Pulp & Paper: Weak active in defoamers, knockdown enhancer, formulation stabilizer, penetration agent.
- Textile: low to non-foaming wetting, slip, lubrication, penetration aid.
- Automotive & household products: wetting, shine, slip, anti-squeak, lubrication, foam control, penetrant.
- Coatings: flow & leveling agent with good slip, low to non-foaming, compatibilizer
