- Product Information
MultiSal™ Fragrance is a fragrance encapsulation technology that provides extended and triggered release of fragrance from various anhydrous applications.
Fragrances are used in a variety of personal care and household applications to enhance consumer experience or to act as a marker for the function of a product. The main problem with usage of fragrances is their volatility. Additionally, fragrance components such as aldehydes can react with base ingredients resulting in premature oxidation and discoloration.
MultiSal™ technology offers a solution to both of these issues by protecting fragrances from evaporative loss and oxidation while providing a mechanism for ondemand, moisture-triggered release.
Multisal™ Technology
MultiSal™ technology is based on a double-layered encapsulation. The fragrance is encapsulated in hydrophobic, sub-micron spheres (0.1-0.3 microns) that are encased within a larger hydrophilic microsphere (30 microns).
Structure of MultiSal™ Fragrance with an outer microsphere shell comprising sub-micron spheres infused with fragrance.
The double encapsulation provides extra protection for the fragrance; the outer microsphere shell must be broken down in order for the fragrance to be released. Once the outer shell is exposed to moisture and friction, it breaks down and releases the sub-micron spheres containing the fragrance, which then release fragrance via diffusion over a prolonged period of time. Additional moisture presence will result in more sub-micron diffusers being released, and thus a more intense fragrance response.

Heat Stability
Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) is a technique used to determine at what point the MultiSal™ system will break down when exposed to high temperatures.
Effect of temperature on MultiSal™ Fragrance. There is minimal weight loss from the MultiSal™ when exposed to temperatures up to 160° C.
The structure of MultiSal™ is resilient up to 160˚C. This qualifies MultiSal™ Fragrance for use in various hot pour procedures without significant fragrance loss.
Long-Lasting Fragrance Release
Fragrance intensity was evaluated from a deodorant stick containing 1.5% fragrance from either MultiSal™ or free fragrance . MultiSal™ controls the release of the fragrance over the course of 12 hours and, as a result, maintains a higher intensity over the free.

Water-Triggered Release
Fragrance intensity was evaluated on a scale of 0 to 5 before and after water activation of a dry shampoo containing either free fragrance or MultiSal™ Fragrance at a 0.5% fragrance loading . After exposure to moisture, fragrance intensity from the MultiSal™ application increased by almost three times, while the intensity of the free fragrance decreased significantly. The MultiSal™ technology better protects fragrance from evaporation until it is triggered with moisture, resulting in an “on-demand” response. This is, again, due to the double layer of encapsulation.

Malodor Reduction
Hair tresses were treated with smoke and evaluated for malodor intensity over time after application of a dry shampoo containing 0.5 % fragrance in either MultiSal™ or in free form . Malodor was evaluated on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being the most intense malodor. The technology controls the release of fragrance to continuously minimize the smoke odor and reduce its intensity better than the free fragrance.
