NutriScience Innovations Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate)

Hyaluronic acid, also known as Sodium Hyaluronate, is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. It is found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints. Its function is to preserve water and keep tissues lubricated. Almost half of the hyaluronic acid in the body is present in the skin. There it binds to water to help retain moisture. The aging process, and exposure to UV radiation and environmental aggressors causes the amount of hyaluronic acid amounts in the skin to decrease. Supplementing with hyaluronic acid has been shown to increase the amount present in the body.

Scientific Studies

Mechanism of Action:

The Mechanism of action of Hyaluronic Acid is not completely known however it is believed to play a role in improving the viscosity of synovial fluid, provide shock absorbing and lubrication benefits and may help to reduce joint pain.

Clinical Studies:

  • A double-blinded, placebo-controlled study over a 12-week period showed significantly diminished wrinkles compared with the placebo group after 8 weeks of ingestion and improved skin luster and suppleness after 12 weeks.
  • The effect of oral Hyaluronic Acid administration on the symptoms of knee OA was investigated in a one-year, prospective randomized study. When combined with quadriceps strengthening exercises the treatment may have beneficial therapeutic effects especially in patients under the age of 70.
