- A potent and powerful oil, Oregano has been used since ancient times in traditional practice. Oregano Oil is derived from the Origanum vulgare - a hardy, busy perennial herb (part of the mint family) which grows up to 90cm. Origanum vulgare is native to Europe, however it is now commonly cultivated all over the world. Oregano Oil is produced by the steam distillation of the leaves and shoots. It is a clear mobile liquid with a strong herbaceous, sweet, dry, peppery odor.

- Common Uses
- Oregano oil is used in perfumery for its powerful refreshing note and its spicy-herbaceous effect.
- With its high carvacrol content, it is a good insect repellent.
- Oregano oil is utilized for its antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties which fight bacterial and fungal growths.
- Its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties make it a great addition to skin creams for ailments such as eczema and dermatitis.
- Must be diluted well if using in diffusers or inhalers due to its high phenol content.
- Great in natural cleaning products due to its powerful cleansing and purifying properties.
- It is very popular as a fragrance in men’s products.

- General Chemical Composition
- Main Chemical Components: Carvacrol, thymol, para-cymene, γ-terpinene
- The main component is Carvacrol – typically about 71%.
- The oil contains compounds called phenols, terpenes and terpenoids, which have powerful antioxidant properties and are responsible for its fragrance.
- Carvacrol is a natural inhibitor of bacterial growth.
