MagProtein was founded in 2017 initially to produce fish feed from insects for use in the local aquaculture industry in Nigeria. We soon found out that insects have a wider role to play in our food system due to their ability to recycle low value organic material into high value nutrients. We have spent the last 3 years researching at scale the use of insects as a biotechnology catalyst to remanufacture organic material into scarce nutrients that ensure a much better footprint on our environment than many of the materials widely used today as sources of nutrients. We use Black Soldier Fly (BSF), primarily because they are a non-pest fly, can grow rapidly under the right conditions and are highly nutritious. Insects form a large part of the natural diet for birds, fish and other wild life, and can reduce or replace the use of fishmeal, soybean meal and synthetic fertilizer in the food value chain. We have grown from a small pilot facility with a colony that introduced around 300 freshly emerged BSF daily to a much larger more efficient facility that now introduces 500 BSF every minute into a state of the art colony.

NatOil is a natural source of digestible energy for fish and pets, with high proportions of medium chain fatty acids. It contains an abundance of Lauric acid which has well-documented anti-microbial properties and acts as a probiotic in aquaculture and pet food. NatOil promotes gut health and a strong immune system when used in diets. It is a quick source of energy for juvenile animals and their fragile digestive systems. Lipids from insects like NatOil have been proven to reduce the need for antibiotics in Poultry, aquaculture and pets. NatOil is made by the separation of oil generated during the defatting process. This is a gentle process that ensures the removal of any sludge and excess moisture during purification.

NatMeal is a highly nutritious animal feed ingredient made from Black Soldier Fly larvae. NatMeal is an excellent source of protein with high quality amino acid profile required for optimal growth. NatMeal also contains healthy fat, natural Lysine, methionine, and is rich in Calcium. NatMeal is a highly palatable and digestible insect protein meal intended for optimal growth and development of poultry, fish and pets. The use of NatMeal greatly reduces greenhouse gasses, water consumption and ecological damage when compared to Soya bean meal or Fishmeal, thus making our insect protein a more sustainable solution to reducing the impact of climate change in the future. NatMeal can also be used in hypoallergenic diets where Pets or Farmed animals have shown allergic reactions to Soy Bean, Poultry or fish meal.
