Science
- The skin is daily exposed to irritants, among which are countless substances found in cosmetic products. The cosmetic intolerance syndrome (CIS) consists of irritation and discomfort after the application of skin care products and is mediated by inflammation. One of the inflammatory factors released by skin cells in response to damage induced by irritants are prostaglandins. Cyclooxygenase (COX) is the key enzyme in their synthesis and has two isoforms: COX-1, needed for physiologic functions, and COX-2, overexpressed in inflammation and responsiblfoer pain and redness. Thus, selective inhibition of COX-2 is a way to prevent excessive inflammation.
- Actisoothe® advanced botanical ingredient is an extract of the mushrooms Cordyceps sinensis and Trametes versicolor, native to Himalaya and widely used in traditional medicine for their valuable properties. By selectively reducing COX-2 gene expression, this active ingredient can help prevent irritation caused by different elements, like UV radiation, and eventually relieve overly reactive skin in individuals suffering the CIS.
