During calving, the dairy cow not only "loses" her calf, but also releases a lot of liquid and minerals through the amniotic fluid and afterbirth:
- Amniotic fluid about 15 liters
- Afterbirth (about 7 kg, 80% water) about 6 liters
- Calf (approx. 45 kg, 70% water) approx. 30 liters
Thus, calving means a total liquid loss of about 10% of the dairy cow.
