Coelan® Balcony Base is a single component, liquid applied, moisture cured, aromatic polyurethane elastomeric basecoat. Standard colors are gray and tan.
Applications & Uses

- Use
Coelan® Balcony Base is used as part of the Coelan® Balcony coating system over balconies, walkways, patios, and sun decks. The system may be applied over concrete, plywood, most metal, wood, and masonry surfaces, as well as capable of recovering and resealing existing polyurethane coating systems.
- Limitations
The following conditions must not be coated with the Coelan® Balcony coating systems or products: on below grade slabs, split slabs with buried membrane, sandwich slabs with insulation, slabs over unvented metal pan, suspended pool decks, swimming pools, magnesite, lightweight concrete, asphalt surfaces and asphalt overlays. Balcony Base may be applied only when the ambient temperature is 50 ºF (10 ºC) or rising, and the substrate temperature is a minimum of 5 degrees above the dew point. The basecoat is not UVstable and must be coated with the finish within 48 hours.
- Yield
Refer to System Application Rates. All yields are approximate and may vary depending upon smoothness and absorbency of substrate.
- Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be free from gross irregularities, loose, unsound or foreign material such as dirt, ice, snow, water, grease, oil, release agents, lacquers, or any other condition that would be detrimental to adhesion of the topcoat.
Note: Prior to opening the containers of Coelan® Balcony Base, wear appropriate safety glasses and protect hands and wrists by wearing gauntlet-type neoprene gloves.
- Mixing of Base Coat
Before application, mix Coelan® Balcony Base using a mechanical mixer at slow speed until a homogeneous mixture and color is obtained. Use caution not to whip air into the material as this may result in pinhole blisters and/or shortened pot life.
- Application
Apply Coelan® Balcony Base evenly over the entire deck with a squeegee, phenolic resin core roller, or notched trowel. Extra care should be taken not to cause air bubbles. The basecoat requires continuous coating application to minimize lines and/or streaking.
The basecoat requires two coats. To obtain proper adhesion between coats it is imperative that re-coating be done within 48 hours. If more than 48 hours passes between coats, reprime the surface with Coelan® Balcony Primer RC.
Use Coelan® Surfacing Sand, approximately 16-20 mesh size at the rate of 20lbs/100 sq. ft. or s required to achieve a slip-resistant finish, into the wet second coat, covering it completely.
Coelan® Balcony Base is very sensitive to heat and moisture. Higher temperatures and/or high humidity will accelerate the cure time, use caution in batch sizes and thickness of application. If accelerated curing is required in low temperatures, add one quart of Coelan® Balcony Base Accelerator in a 5 gallon pail of Coelan® Balcony Base and mix thoroughly.
This accelerated Base will cure in 6-8 hours at 75°F (24°C) and 50% relative humidity.
Equipment should be cleaned with an environmentally safe solvent, as permitted under local regulations, immediately after use.
