Basic Uses

The 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER is a single component aluminized urethane with excellent adhesion to hand cleaned steel, fiberglass, aluminum and aged paints. Recommended as an aluminum self prime finish coat for normal weather and mild marine exposures and as an anti-bleed primer for chemical resistant finish coats. The 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER can be top-coated with almost any type of finish system if a color coat is required.

Application Instructions

Correct surface preparation is of the utmost importance. Surface must be sound, clean, dry and free of oil, grease or any other contaminants. Obvious damaged areas must be repaired before the application of the coating. For applications over steel, sandblasting to a minimum SSPC-SP 6 Commercial Blast is recommended, however, the 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER has demonstrated excellent adhesion to hand cleaned steel and rusted surfaces where all loose contaminants have been removed.

Fiberglass and aluminum surfaces must be mechanically abraded to remove all surface sheen and then either pressure washed or solvent wiped before the application of the 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER. When over coating the 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER, apply the second coat as soon as the first coat is touch dry.

Do not allow the first coat to fully harden as intercoat adhesion may be affected. If more than 24 hours elapses between coats, sand well before applying second coat.

The 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER can be applied by brush, roller or spray. For conventional spray applications use De Vilbiss MBC or JGA spray guns with an "E" Fluid Tip. The recommended atomizing pressure is 40 to 60 psi with a pot pressure of 15 to 30 psi depending on site conditions. Airless spray applications require a minimum tip pressure of 2500 psi and a tip range of 15 to 20 thou. 510A ALUMINIZED URETHANE PRIMER may be thinned for spraying using 580 URETHANE THINNER only at a maximum rate of 10%.

Special Handling

Use normal precautions such as gloves, coveralls, eye protection and face mask with, cartridges approved for inorganic vapors. When spraying, free isocyanates may be present; use air-fed, full face mask if in enclosed area. May cause sensitization in susceptible individuals. Protect skin with barrier creams. Wash skin contact areas thoroughly with lukewarm water. Eye contact; flush with copious amounts of water and obtain medical attention immediately. Maintain adequate ventilation in enclosed areas.

Shelf Life

3 months at 5 to 24°C, inside storage, out of sun and direct heat.
