Phosphorous acid can be used as the raw material of phosphate and phosphonate, reductive agent, nylon whitening agent and anti-oxidant, stablizer for plastics, organo-phosphorus pesticide intermediate and chemical reagent.
Phosphorous acid can also be used as fertilizer additive in agroculture industry.

Phosphorous acid is soluble in water and alcohol, slowly oxidized to orthophosphoric acid in air and decomposes to orthophosphoric acid and phosphine if heated to 180°C.
