- Product Highlights
- Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a hydrogenated derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol. It is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid that has been identified as a trace component in the seeds and pollen of Cannabis sativa, but can also be produced synthetically by hydrogenation of cannabidiol in a process similar to that which is used to convert vegetable oil into margarine.
- Hexahydrocannabinol does have psychoactive properties similar to THC, although it is not nearly as potent as THC. Users report a euphoric effect that is more of a “relaxing body high” than stimulating. Due diligence suggests that marketers label products that contain HHC as strictly for 21+ adult use only and bear a warning for potential euphoric effects.
- Hexahydrocannabinol is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid derived from hemp, and as such no law explicitly prohibits it. However, because HHC does not naturally occur in significant amounts in hemp, chemical processes are needed to yield commercially viable quantities. As such, HHC may be treated like Delta-8 and Delta-10 THC by individual states. There is also the potential for HHC and other chemically converted psychoactive cannabinoids to be ruled as being subject to the Federal Analog Act and be defined as a Schedule I drug. Marketers are encouraged to remain apprised of the legal status of all cannabinoid products in their respective states, and be prepared to adjust their product offerings if any specific compounds, including HHC, are formally deemed to be illegal in their state or on a Federal level.
- To date, all anecdotal evidence is based on user experience and appears to be as safe as any hemp-derived cannabinoids. Of course, HHC is a new development in the hemp industry and long-term usage data and substantial clinical research does not yet exist.
