- Fruit Black pepper is a flowering vine, cultivated for its fruit, known as a peppercorn, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.
- The fruit is drupe (stonefruit), dark red, and contains a stone which encloses a single pepper seed. Black pepper, which is well known regarded as the king of spices, is also widely used in the traditional medicine in many countries. It is native to the Malabar Coast of India. It has been used since antiquity, both for flavor and as a traditional medicine. Black pepper is the world's most traded spice, and is one of the most common spices added to cuisines around the world.

- Black pepper contains about 5–9% of the alkaloids piperine and piperettine and about 1.2– 5% of volatile oil. It contains a variety of chemical constituents, such as piperolides, propenylphenols, amides, neolignans, lignans, flavonoids, terpenes and steroids. It is also a source of potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and minute amounts of vitamins K and C. The main essential compounds detected are germacrene D, limonene, b-pinene, a-phellandrene, b-caryophyllene, a-pinene and cis-b-ocimene.
