- Product Highlights
L-theanine is an amino acid that supports relaxation and aids in a healthy stress response by potentially reducing cortisol levels, the stress hormone, in the body. Adaptogens, like L-theanine, respond to the body’s mental and physical reactions to stress and may help balance hormone levels, evoking calmness and focus. L-theanine is an ideal ingredient for anti-stress and increased focus, delivered in functional beverages, dietary supplements and other related products.
- L-theanine accounts for nearly 50% of the total amino acids found in green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) with the median amount of L-theanine per cup of brewed tea at 8-30 mg per cup.
- Research indicates that L-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier, and supplementation of L-theanine at 200 - 400 mg/day has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, particularly in individuals under stressful conditions.
- Studies show that L-theanine supplementation affects alpha wave activity in the brain, which is linked to a non-drowsy restful state or sense of overall calm. Emerging data also suggests L-theanine may help with attention or the ability to stay on task, especially under conditions of high-stress.

Supporting Healthy Stress Response and Alpha Wave Activity
Functional beverages are a perfect fit with L-theanine, which was studied in a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial in which an L-TeaActive® based beverage significantly reduced stress and cortisol levels in healthy adults.- Design:
- 34 healthy adults aged 18-40 consumed a placebo beverage or one containing 200 mg L-TeaActive®, 1 mg phosphatidylserine (PS), 25 mg alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC) and 10 mg chamomile
- Outcomes:
- Results showed a statistically significant reduction in acute stress response and cortisol levels in those subjects with high anxiety
- Treatment produced significantly greater brain alpha wave activity measured by magnetoencephalogy (MEG), which is typically associated with a relaxed state
Supporting Attention and Reaction Time Response
Researchers divided groups into those with high anxiety and those with minimal anxiety propensity using the manifest anxiety scale (MAS) to study the L-theanine supplementation effects in two healthy groups of young adults.- Design:
- 18 healthy adults aged 18-20 consumed a placebo or 200 mg L-theanine per 100 ml water
- Outcomes:
- Results showed significantly enhanced alpha wave activity in the brain, decreased heart rate, increased performance of visual attention tasks, and shorter reaction times in those subjects with a propensity for high-anxiety
- L-theanine did not increase drowsiness or impair reflexes or concentration
