PT is commonly used for soil remediation and to treat wastewater with high levels of petroleum hydrocarbons. It is also commonly used in wash water recycle systems, oil/water separators and parts washers. Substances that PT degrades and consumes include:
- Easier to treat - Fats, oils and greases (FOGs), hydrocarbons with shorter chain lengths including benzene, gasoline, diesel; PAH's and other hydrocarbons including paraffin, phenanthrene, fluorene and napthalene; straight chain alkanes (C10 - C24), branched chain alkanes such as cyclohexane and Monoaromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, phenol and toluene.
- Treatable - bunker A, dibenzothiophene, naphthothiophene, benzothiophene, pyrene, anthracene, fuel oils with less than 30 chains
- Treatable, but longer treatment duration (recommend experiments in lab first) - bunker C, crude oil, machine oil, lubricant oils and hydrocarbons with more than 30 chains
- Not able to treat - tar, pitch, bitumen, asphalt and coal
