- Leucophor® AFCN liquid is approved by FDA under FCN 1921 for use as an optical brightener in paper and paperboard with the following limitations:
- Leucophor® AFCN liquid is intended for use as an optical brightener in uncoated and clay coated, paper and paperboard, in contact with Food Types I, II, IV-B, VI, and VII-B. Leucophor® AFCN liquid may also be used in polymer coated paper and paperboard in contact with all food types. The optical brightener is limited to use at levels not to exceed 0.90 pound per short ton of paper (0.45kg/tonne). The product is not for use in contact with infant formula and human milk. Such use was not included as part of the intended use of the substance in the FCN.
- There is no limitation for the use of Leucophor® AFCN liquid in paper and paperboard in contact with dry foods.
- Leucophor® AFCN liquid is a highly substantive, ultra-concentrated, disulphonated stilbene brightener which exhibits very good build up even at extremely low concentrations. It is especially suited for stock application in neutrally sized and calcium carbonate filled papers and for use in coating formulations which contain PVOH, CMC or casein as a secondary binder.
- Leucophor® AFCN liquid is readily dilutable with water in all proportions and exhibits very good stability to hard and soft water and alkaline conditions. It may be used continuously or batchwise as required and is compatible with most anionic and nonionic products. Resistance to interference from cationic products is better than with tetra or hexasulphonated products but may vary and should be determined in preliminary trials.
- Leucophor® AFCN liquid is one of the most effective OBAs for use in wood containing grades such as improved newsprint. Whilst increases in brightness in these types of papers are modest in comparison to those produced with fully bleached chemical pulps, Leucophor® AFCN liquid has been found to perform well.
- Leucophor® AFCN liquid is approved by FDA under FCN 1921 for use as an optical brightener in paper and paperboard with the following limitations:
