Applications
Application Method
Applications
  • Mixing: Stir thoroughly, making sure no pigment remains on the bottom of the can.
  • Thinning: This coating is VOC compliant; only thin if permitted by federal, state and local regulations. If necessary, use Anchor #J1131 for spray applications and #J1112 for brush and roller requirements.

Application Equipment

  • Roller: Use 1/4" synthetic nap covers.
  • Brush: Use high quality natural china bristle brushes.

The recommended method of application is by airless spray. However, brush, roller, or conventional spray may also be used. To avoid dusting, apply in wet coats. On a derusted surface, the application of a dry film thickness of at least 2 mils is recommended. With any oxidative coating, faster dry time may be obtained with increased air movement and/or higher substrate or material temperature.

Application: Use with J1100 Urethane Catalyst

When used with Anchor J1100 Urethane catalyst; an 8:1 ratio is used; the optimal blend is 8 parts of Saf-TGard II 900 series enamel and 1 part of J1100. In actual use this is one gallon of the 900 series Saf-T-Gard II enamel and a pint of J1100.

The following table gives the expected dry times associated with application

All time in Hours 900 w/o J1100

900 w/8:1 J1100 Added

Dry to Touch 3.5 2.5
Tack Free 5 4.5
Dry Through 24 24

Where to Use

This product is a heavy-duty enamel designed for architectural and industrial maintenance applications.

Preparation & Priming

Surface Preparation

For maximum performance, the recommended substrate should be blasted in accordance with SSPC-SP7. If blast cleaning is not feasible, the substrate should be degreased in accordance with SSPC-SP1. All burrs should be removed and sharp edges or rough weld seams should be ground down. Full use should then be made of mechanical power tools, in conjunction with wire brushing and chipping to remove all loose rust and mill scale to a standard of cleanliness conforming to SP-2 or SP-3. Prior to painting, all dust should be removed from the substrate by using clean brushes and/or dry compressed air.

Primer Coats

Typically, Anchor #1600 Series Rust Inhibitive Primers are recommended.

Safety & Health

Safety Information
  • Danger Flammable liquid and vapor. Vapor harmful. Contains: mineral spirits and n-butyl acetate. Vapor harmful. May affect the brain or nervous system causing dizziness, headache or nausea. Causes nose, eye, skin and throat irritation. Harmful if swallowed. Notice: reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents may be harmful or fatal.
  • Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Vapors may cause flash fire. Do not smoke. Extinguish all flames and pilot lights, and turn off stoves, heaters, electric motors and other sources or ignition during use and until all vapors are gone. Prevent build-up of vapors by opening all windows and doors to achieve cross-ventilation. Use only with adequate ventilation. Do not breathe vapors or spray mist. Ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. If you experience eye watering, headache or dizziness or if air monitoring demonstrates vapor/mist levels are above applicable limits, wear an appropriate, properly fitted respirator (niosh approved) during and after application. Follow respirator manufacturer’s directions for respirator use. Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Wash thoroughly after handling. Keep out of reach of children.
  • If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. Lead is toxic. Exposure to lead dust can cause serious illness, such as brain damage, especially in children. Pregnant women should also avoid exposure. Wear a niosh-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a hepa vacuum and a wet mop.
